“By 2030, expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programmes, including water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse technologies.”

Although the implementation of SDG 6 is expected to generate benefits that greatly exceed the costs of doing so, hundreds of billions of dollars still need to be raised to fund it. Needs are greatest in developing countries, and this calls for an increased mobilization of domestic funds, but also a significant scaling-up of external support to cover interim gaps while national capacity and resources are under development. In this regard, target 6.a seeks to expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries.

Global Indicators for this Sub-goal:

  • 6.a.1 “Amount of water- and sanitation-related official development assistance that is part of a government-coordinated spending plan”
